Printing Tips to Save Money
- Configure your printer to print only black and white. To
do this go to the Help section of your Windows software (Start
> Help & Support) and search on the keyword phrase "personal
printing preferences". Follow the instructions given to
you based on your computer system and printer brand.
- Print in "draft" mode. Printing coloring pages for kids to
color does not require top-notch quality print outs. You'll
save tons of ink if you use low-quality printing options.
- Buy refurbished printer cartridges
. Many online printing
suppliers offer refurbished cartridges. The use of them may
not be covered under your printer warranty, BUT if you paid
$100 for the printer and you pay $35 for each cartridge the
manufacturer recommends versus $5-$10 for a refurbished cartridge,
you do the math. Over time the printer manufacturer is making
far more money from you on the cartridges which is why they
are selling their printers for such a low price.
- I personally
have an Epson Stylus 740 which I paid $125 for about 5 years
ago. I've been using refurbished cartridges in it for the entire
time because I do a lot of printing. I probably use at least
10 black cartridges in a year. Retail costs of the cartridges
for my printer is $35 each. Refurbished cartridges cost me
about $6
each. So I've saved $290.
- I also have my printer configured to print only in black
and in draft mode (see Tip #2 above). So I rarely use my color
cartridge. I might replace it twice a year with a refurbish
cartridge IF it dries out which it will do if you don't use
it often and the printer won't work without it.
